Own Goal - Cullen Head Butts Ref

The ribs are aching again.

Do you remember that amazing South American soccer player, Rodolfo? Well he's just put the boot into Clarkullen and they are squirming because he's from the UN and he reports to their HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION. Bugger it, he's a professor as well. Yeah but only a Mexican professor so he's obviously second rate.

Oh dear dear. He invited himself to New Zild and they didn't dare refuse. Here's the pathetic spin from Clark:

Prime Minister Helen Clark described the committee's process as "most unsatisfactory", and downplayed the body's status.

"This is a committee that sits on the outer edges of the UN system."

Professor Stavenhagen, a Mexican researcher who reports to the UN Commission on Human Rights, arrives this week.

He will attend four hui, including a major one at Parihaka at the weekend, where he can expect to hear severe criticism of the Government.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen, who crafted the foreshore law, will meet Professor Stavenhagen. Dr Cullen declined to comment yesterday.

Tell us again Helen about how important it is to have the UN decide what colour Antipodean toilet paper is acceptable and appropriate.

This is a little out of context - Ms Clark is referring to the report of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination - which came out last year.

The Professor you refer to reports to the UN Committee on Human Rights, which is formed under the First Optional Protocal to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which is a significantly more important and more respected treaty and treaty body.

I am confident that Ms Clark holds the UN Human Rights Committee in a much higher regard than she holds the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, not least because its decisions and membership are much more sensible.

Thank you for that Graeme. This raises the question of truthful reporting. Did the Herald deliberately misquote our glorious leader and attribute to her a comment she did not make about this committee? If so, they ought to be shot. Well, I think they ought to be shot anyway.

A phone call to the PM's office indicates Mr Edgler is correct. It seems the comments by the PM were indeed quoted out of context. Readers will well know Adolf's attitude toward the current PM is usually quite uncivil but his attitude to scurrilous news rags is decidedly more so. There's something wrong when even the leftie papers find they have to bag their own pinko PM.
