Here's 'Tiberias':
This is as good enough a demonstration as any of why I loath Sir Humphrey's. Here we have Adolf Finklestein libeling Pete Hodgson with an exaggerated version of events he heard from the right wing echo chamber.
Tiberias then links to The Press reporter Colin Espiner's blog post on the infamous Pete Hodgson-Madelaine Flannagan incident. As it turned out Espiner distorted the events that day, his post has been erased, and he apologised to Madelaine.

But you can be sure Tiberias still loathes us.

Here's the retraction AL.
Since Madelaine F was obviously no threat to the PM, one wonder what happened to the police inquiries
into Pete Hodgson's alleged assault against her.

Press statement
21 September 2005

Colin Espiner's campaign trail blog from September 6 referred to a demonstration during Prime Minister Helen Clark's visit to Otago University.

The blog entry referred to the demonstration as an Act Party publicity stunt and mentioned that Espiner had been hit on the head by a placard. We wish to make it clear that Madeleine Flannagan, who was present, had nothing to do with Espiner being hit and was not a threat to the Prime Minister.

We regret it if any such inference was drawn. Ms Flannagan has no connection with the Act Party and has never had any connection with it.

She is a former Christian Heritage candidate and is communications director for the Locke Foundation.

Tiberias might be in a spot of bother on two counts. First, he has libelled me. Second he needs to show that I have damaged Pistol Pete's reputation. It's not possible for me to do that. He hasn't got one, well certainly not since that incident.

Oh well, who cares. Just another thin skinned leftie who can't spell.

The bigger issue of course is that Espiner made up several facts with nasty implications and published them on a Fairfax site. Yet he remains in his job, while a columnist for Maxim was fired for plagiarism. Shouldn't lying from a chief political reporter, especially on politically sensitive topics during an election campaign, result in immediate dismissal?

Not if it happens in New Zealand.

Speaking of loathing. Here's a great follow-up to the whole white phosphorus nonstory:

Be sure to read the second update to the post.

Gee, that's some classy Independent reporter. Who needs facts? At least he spells better than whats-her-name, the political editor of The NZ Herald.

Adolf, I'm really, really upset...

You just spat on the true Pistol Pete (Maravich, the basketball player in the US, back in the 1970's), by using his nick to describe Mr. "there IS NO COAL!!!" Hodgswine.

Poor Pete...

I remember listening to Sir Roger Douglas at a conference once when some Act members and MP's were concerned about unpopular policies and the hate it would carry. Roger, like he only can, said "you're not doing your job unless 40% of NZ hate you. Expect to be hated".

I loved it, and he's right.

And when 98.5% of New Zealand hates you?

What a moment of shear brilliance from danyl. Do you hate anything you don't vote for?
