Our Dom

Signs the Dominion Post is not a newspaper, reporting news, but a pop magazine, reporting trivia:

1. The cover of today's DomPost announces "Our Rach on Gilligan's Island".
Notice the use of "Our", and then the abbreviation of Rachel. Then drop the last name. Now we are connecting with the people, and isn't the DomPost hip and just in-there because whenever Rach drops in to the Editorial office, to chat to the guys about Angie and Don T., you know its just going to be fun. And Gilligan's island? I see tomorrows headline from DomPost: We scoop Women's Weekly on the G.I. story. Our Rach spills the beans.

2. Turning to the world news, I see about 14 lines of text devoted to the German election stand-off and about 12 lines to the Polish Presidency race. There are interesting parallels for NZ, and a lot of significant politics is happening in Europe. Rumour has it. Contrast this, on the same page, with an in-depth article on ageing fine wines through electrolysis. There was space left over to run a story of the FBI considering hiring agents even if they formerly smoked dope.

It can't be long before the front page will promise 6 pack abs for summer, the best places to park the caravan and your 2006 personalised horoscope (full details B3). It wont happen overnight, but it will happen.

If this Rachel is Rachel Hunter, I thought she was rightwing and pro-Bush.

This is after all the paper that publishes banal rubbish from "columnists" like Linley Boniface and Tracy Watkins (she working for Helen yet? Wouldn't even need a change in writing style/content). The only redeeming factor about them is publishing Joe Bennett (love his writing).
