NZ Politics in a Nutshell: A Guide for Overseas Readers

For the benefit of our current influx of new readers, we present this quick guide to New Zealand politics. Ever wanted to learn the nuances of the governance of an isolated and irrelevant tussock-ridden backwater? Well, now's your chance!

The Prime Minister is Helen Clark. Her three defining quotes are "the role of government is whatever government defines it to be", "I sometimes feel I am a victim of my own success as a popular and competent Prime Minister", and (just before September 11) "We live in an incredibly benign strategic environment". In other words she is an arrogant, meddling, statist, terrorist-appeasing idiot.

The latest election (less than a month ago) returned her and the Evil Party to office for a record third term (and, thanks to the wonders of our German-style multi-party system, probably in coalition with the Luddite Communist Envirocult Party, the Racial Separatist Party, and one of the two Personality Cult Parties).

On the bright side, the Slightly Less Socialist party (the main opposition party) doubled its share of the vote from its total disaster of three years ago. Also we here at Sir Humphrey's fight on unpeturbed as a voice for smaller government and anti-terrorist foreign policy. So hope springs eternal. Do pop back and visit us again some time.

Yes, the uncontrollable sobbing stage has passed. Luckily I haven't been online much recently.

Whatever your political values are, publishing disrespectful comments that amount to petty name calling just makes you look like a hack.

And perhaps a fourth thing. Our popular and competent PM has declared Sweden as the shining example for New Zealand.

One would think that this would be an incentive for our newspapers to find out a little more about Sweden. What did she mean by that? Is Sweden an example? In what respect?

But the silence was deafening. Did they know the PM said a stupid thing and they just covered it up (as usual). Or were they too lazy?

This site has been the best news source in New Zealand about Sweden thanks to the excellent work of Chefen. Readers of this site know more about Sweden than anyone else in this country. And it has really started to scare us that the PM thinks Sweden is an example.

Again Chefen, thanks for your all our articles about Sweden. I continue to appreciate all that information.

Respect must be earned. The words and deeds of the labour Goverment over the last 6 years has done nothing to that end.

On the subject of Helen's "three defining quotes," you've obviously forgotten her 'arguement'from an earlier election that "The State is sovereign."

You also forgot her statement to an aussie magazine, where she declared herself to be either a "hero" or a "role-model" (I forget which) to young women in NZ.
