Planning the invasion of Taiwan

If I was Taiwanese I'd be mildly alarmed by this photo.

[CLICK TO ENLARGE - but its very big]

UPDATE: The 2nd photo is of a Chinese "PAP" (People's Armed Police apparently) in Iraq.

A week or so ago when the devastation of the Hurricane became clear, I said to myself that if I was China, I would think about taking Taiwan, as the USA has its hands full.

But... Taiwan can probably take out Hong Kong and Shanghai by itself. Economic disaster.

I think the USA have heaps of submarines that would probably act as a disincentive to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

The Taiwanese have been expecting this for generations. No surprises there.

I'm not sure if the Chinese would want to use force to retake Taiwan, not yet anyway. Why the rush, it's not like there're WMDs hidden in the presidential palace. If things go pear-shaped in China (social discontent, famine etc) then the PLA might look at crossing the straits. Otherwise, keep up the diplomatic and economic pressure.

The best way to win a war is to do it without any shooting. The Chinese have known this since the days of Sun Tzu.

If I'm not mistaken the Taiwan defense policy is to prevent the Chinese gaining landfall at all. Once the island has fallen I don't think most plans call for retaking it by force. Nothing going on in mainland USA is going to change the situation in the day or two of fighting that'd decide the fate of Taiwan and the US fleet helping protect the area isn't going to be withdrawn to arrive too late in the Gulf of Mexico for clean up duty.

Isn't it Chinese policy to use nukes on the USA if they interfere with an attempted invasion? Will have to re-read that Chinese strategy document again.

Yes AL, I recall something feisty from the War Minister in China saying that US action could force a regrettable nuclear strike on America...but it would only be if America absolutely forced their hand or something...

We live in an extremely benign strategic environment.

At least we've done out bit for the quality of US Air Force, Navy and Marine pilots.

Pity the next time NZ soldiers get sent into a major war they will again die because the don't have NZ air cover.
