Outright Lies #3

The Greens are claiming the EB brochures are filled with outright lies. I'm having a look at the claims, one by one, to see how the EB may have formed their opinion.

Outright Lie #3: Introduce a carbon tax, putting power prices up by 10%

Well, that's what they want to do. Introduce a carbon tax in support of Kyoto. No doubt about it, but they say its for the best possible reasons. But why is this a lie then? Because the Greens are trying to weasel out of it by using fine print. The prices will not go up 10% because the price of fuel has already gone up considerably, so the impact, in percentage terms is less. We are splitting hairs over what the percentage increase might be. I could spend an afternoon searching for a range of valid estimates, but given we are talking Kyoto payments in excess of a billion dollars, it is not unreasonable to suggest a 10% impact to energy pricing.

Also of note is the Greens proposed tax rebate of $15 per week now only compensates for the world price rises, not the new taxes. How can I believe their costings when they don't want to show them? The rising fuel costs put pressure not only on the family budget to get kids to school, or down to the netball and footy fields on the weekend, and do the shopping, but on the food delivery costs, oil burning, and Kyoto also extends to adding costs to coal, logging, cow flatulence and quite possibly volcanic eruption.

The reality is the Kyoto funding eco-taxes they need to put on will cost more than $15 per week on offer to workers. And given it also affects base food prices (and increases GST take) how will beneficiaries cope?

Seems like more spin than substance to me. Verdict: Guilty.
