New Orleans turning nasty - shots fired at National Guard helicopter

It happened at the Superdome, where Fox tells us 25,000 people are holed up without proper sanitation.
"We have suspended operations until they gain control of the Superdome," said Richard Zeuschlag, head of Acadian Ambulance, which was handling the evacuation of sick and injured people from the Superdome.

He said that military would not fly out of the Superdome either because of the gunfire and that the National Guard told him that it was sending 100 military police officers to gain control.

Also a rescue helicopter pilot refused to land at a hospital helipad because some people on it were walking around with guns.
CNN says it was a Chinook.

Charming. Even the UN under the command of a Canadian general could do a better job than this. Louisiana has a Homeland Security department (like Civil Defense, but upgraded to deal with for terrorist attacks). What the hell are they doing?

Another question: Where is the (small) LA National Guard? Well its major mechanised infantry component is actually serving in Iraq with the 1st Cavalry Division. In turn the (much bigger) Florida National Guard and those of other neighbouring States were supposed to offer support in case of a natural disaster. I assume they are the troops now arriving in New Orleans.

I'm surprised the US media hasn't picked up on this, as it seems a good way to bash Bush.

UPDATE: Keesler Air Force Base, the home of USAF hurricane-monitoring aircraft in Biloxi, has been flattened.

As always you guys in the UK are more informed than us over here in the US. Our media and news is so biased that it is a joke. I actually have to go to the BBC to get semi decent information on what is going on in the world.

Note that New Orleans has 10 times the crime level of the average US city.

The people still there might well be the people who wanted to lote the city in the first place.

You could be right Berend. The violence (and rapes now!) from supposed refugees in the Superdome has reached ridiculous levels. I think we're going to hear much more about life in New Orleans before the Hurricane.

This isn't behaviour expected from a civil population.

Intersting thing about the Louisana National Guard is I remember during the first Gulf War they had an F16 squadron on active duty. I saw the footage of the planes, and made the comparison between the obviously great gear that the State of Louisana had vs NZ's airforce (and that was before the stike wing was dismembered). So my impression is that Louisana has a very good National Guard. These things take time, and there is a huge amount of wrecked infrastructure.
