High Personal Tax Rates Saves Lives

Ross Wilson, Head of the Council of Trade Unions (CTU) insists that high personal tax rates save lives, and that the Unions are effectively useless at helping in the area of workplace safety.

"It is clear that a National Government elected on a bribe of tax cuts would be at the cost of workers' lives," said CTU president Ross Wilson.

If workers have more money in their pockets, they are more likely to die explains Ross Wilson in the above quote. Strangely, other unions disagree with Ross Wilson. They say he is too modest.

"The NZ Construction Industry Council, for instance, has credited the CTU health and safety representative system with a drop in building site deaths from 18 per 100,000 workers in 1996 to 5 per 100,000 workers last year."

The Health and Safety Representative System was a training scheme designed by CTU and (can I say this?) Business NZ. More than 13,000 workers in a range of industries have trained under the CTU site safety representative scheme.

"The CTU and Business NZ are currently developing a joint Stage 3 course for health and safety representatives," Ross Wilson concluded. However, with more money in people's pockets, it is clear he thinks the effort pointless. They are just not going to pay attention if they have a bit more cash one suspects.

It has indeed been fortunate for National that the petrol prices have risen sharply coming into the election. Providing National refrain from dropping any of the petrol tax to help low income families get their kids to school and the shopping done, I'm sure Ross Wilson will be feeling quite positive.

You can either believe, like Ross Wilson, that high tax rates save lives, or you can hope that the millions of dollars invested in workplace saftey schemes have had some effect.
