Damn all these trees

Here's one of the funniest lines I've read in a while. It comes from an article lamenting how the NZ Forestry industry has destroyed $5.5 billion of capital in the past eight years, badly hurting the economy.
"The industry would have made a substantial return if it had not planted trees,"

the conclusion of the article, that new zealand should export unprocessed logs is horseshit. the value was destroyed (if it was not just headline grabbing using crap assumptions) in logging and ownership. Value was added in onshore processing. removing onshore processing would only remove competition for the foriegn buyers and reduce the export price.

this sounds like a japanese trading house funded house trying to con nz into lower forest processing investment.

I've asked someone fairly high-up in the forestry biz to comment. Hopefully will get something back tomorrow.
