Another Pledge?

Gee, National have surged ahead in the polls. I heard Helen Clark 'pledging' not to bring the campaign down into the gutter on the radio, just as I saw a half page advertisement from Labour saying how National planned to spend billions and billions on tax cuts, and slash services. There was no asterisk to say that the billions mentioned were the sum of several years. There was no mention that National's plan was to reduce the rate of Government's planned spending increases. Twisting the truth appears to be business as usual for Labour.

Is that another pledge broken even before she finished speaking?

Well voters aren't stupid, but National hasn't effectively countered Labour's claims that services will be cut. I know people (not long-time Labour supporters) who think National will be cutting core services to pay for these tax cuts.

Come *on* guys. Of course national will cut services! That's the whole damn point! Go and read Sir Don's speeches on the National.org.nz website - he sets out his phiolsophical position quite clearly.

What Helen simply cannot accept - is that mainstream new zealanders understand this point - and the more they understand it they more they want to vote for Sir Don.

we want to pay for schools for our own kids - not someone else who can't be bothered to teach their kids to read

we want to pay for our own health insurance - not for someone else who smokes, drinks, and doesn't bother to look after themselves

we want to make our own savings - not be forced to pay for other people who haven't bother to work or save.

This is the big change don will make: even more than Roger Douglas: giving NZ back to the people.

Yes, of course we know there will be tax cuts - but THATS WHAT WE WANT!

The converse is far more likely - Labour will be raising taxes if they get back in.

Well anon, I'd prefer to have less lifted out of my pocket than fund the wananga, Labour party cananders, hip-hop tours et el, the list is too long to repeat here. Of course there will be spending cuts ... spending on crap we don't want to pay for anymore.
