Concealed gun carrier saves women from knife attack

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - A fatal shooting at an Albuquerque Wal-Mart last week was the state's first by someone with a concealed-carry gun permit, authorities said.

Police said Felix Vigil was attacking his ex-wife with a knife near the store's deli counter where she worked when an armed customer intervened and shot him. The woman, Joyce Cordova, was treated for multiple stab wounds and later released from an Albuquerque hospital.
In New Zealand women can't even carry pepper spray.

According to FBI figures, over 40,000 serious crimes were prevented last year in the U.S.by private gun owners. John Ray has much more on this here: http://gunwatch.blogspot.com/

Facts conveniently overlooked by the anti-gun zealots.

I learned martial arts in my late teens for protection. I've never had to use it, thank goodness. Most of what I learned was to run away - fighting someone is always bad. And men are much stronger.

My scariest moment was when two men tried to cut me off when I was walking down a backstreet. I kept walking without hesitating and nothing happened.

Having a gun would be good.

Guns are good for women, great equalisers. Even learning martial arts isn't too effective since you have to be fast and well trained to respond in time and can't hold the buggars at a distance, once you're in the fight it's a pretty iffy proposition.

I agree, Chefen. Considering that we're not allowed to carry weapons in NZ, martial arts was my only option. Better than nothing.

The biggest thing I learned is that people who attack you tend to be bullies, and bullies are cowards. They will only attack if they think they can win. So if you are confident, you can generally get out of most situations before they turn bad.

Which is why the bullies are increasingly turning towards attacking the elderly, Lucyna.

Yes, it's important to walk around like you own the place, look around like you aren't afraid, but don't make eye contact with anyone. Also handy if you're tall.

I learned these skills after walking near skinheads in Chch and thugs in central Auckland in the middle of the night.

Yeah, they are turning towards the elderly, aren't they, Keith. I wonder if it's because there are more bullies about, or if there are more elderly about, or if in the past elderly people didn't go about alot by themselves?

It seems like there are a lot of elderly living alone now, whereas in the past they would have lived with younger family members.
