Statist Control Freak Worldwide Update

This sort of thing really drives me up the wall:
A council is putting microchips in all 100,000 of its wheelie bins to monitor whether householders are recycling enough of their rubbish.

Dustcarts will empty grey bins one week and green ones the next, with on-board scanning equipment weighing each one and identifying which home the contents come from.

Over time, officials in the Liberal Democrat-controlled council will be able to calculate which households are backsliding on recycling and then advise them on how to do better.

David Osborne, the council's head of environmental services, said: "To change hearts and minds we first need to learn and understand our residents' recycling habits."

The scheme is costing £2.24 million, more than half of which is being paid by the Government.
I have some advice of my own for professional busybodies like Mr Osborne, but this is a family weblog.

Wouldn't it be cheaper, and more in line with leftist tradition, to reward people who inform the authorities that their neighbours aren't separating their plastics? If the offenders were sent to gulags their work could even make the scheme pay for itself...

Wow, it's like something from the GDR. Except that the Stasi never had the technology to keep tabs on everyone's recycling, Gott sei Dank.
