Labour Caucus Motion of Censure of JT

Source Labour press release at Scoop.
That this caucus:
Severely censures John Tamihere for his grossly offensive comments which run counter to the NZ Labour Party's principals, policies of inclusion, and respect for all;
But the Maori Party worries us enough to pretend...
Rejects the views he has expressed, and dissociates the NZ Labour Party from them;
that John Tamihere was mentally ill because of 'stress' when he made the remarks...
Deplores his ill disciplined behaviour;
therefore he's not really responsible for his behaviour...
Notes his statement, that in the run-up to the General Election he will be putting all his efforts into winning the Maori Electorates for Labour. And notes that this is consistent with his duty as a Labour MP to campaign strongly for the re-election of the Labour-led Government;
and we are really worried about the Maori Party...
States its expectation that he will in future operate in a way which is
consistent with the principles and policies of the NZ Labour Party, and which is within accepted decent norms of behaviour towards his caucus colleagues, the wider Labour Party and the diverse groups which make up contemporary NZ.
so Labour has decided that yet again ethics are subordinate to electoral strategy.

did anyone else notice that the guy (a reporter) who read out bits of the motion on Midday Report (NatRad) said "applauds" instead of "deplores"? nearly caused me to drive right off the road, that did.

The Herald online was describing Tamihere as a 'maverick' mp for a while - see preceding post.

Does anyone seriously believe that this whole thing is anything other than a contrived sham? Convince me please that Clark and Cullen, the biggest pair of C's in recent political history, didn't cook this all up??? "Mike, we'll tell the serfs that John is suspended and he's not allowed in the school yard. "Now John, you can crash the caucus but make it look as though we didn't know and that will be fine. Look, we'll make sure you're not chucked out but this has got to look convincing. Now, about all those legal costs, how much was it? But Johnn, there won't be another chance ever. Never. Do you understand? Well, not until we need you again for another election.

Hasn't Labor's slogan for the last five and half years at least been "Ethics, schmethics"?
