The Assumptive Lie

The O'Herald carries an interesting piece of smarm in today's piece on Tommy Hairix. In some places it seems impossible to deal with Tamihere without bias.

It's almost a new species of media bias. I'll called it the assumptive lie which is the lie you tell when you are not telling a lie. Labour are experts at this and they have taught their jounalistic minions well.

The nasty little piece of party propoganda is contained in the apparently innocent phrase "Who is on stress leave." If these apologists for the ninth floor say it often enough it will become 'a known fact' that he was under terrible stress, when in point of fact there was no evidence of any more stress than one would normally associate with the stressful life of an active politician. He did not ask for stress leave. He was forced to take leave in order to relieve the clearly visible stress being suffered by the PM.

It's all part of the ochestrated spin machine, ably abetted by compliant media. quite a neat and subtle combination of the lie and the memory hole. It would have been so easy to add the remedial words "...stress leave imposed by the PM" but that would have given the story a truthful slant.

Media Bias Bullshit Rating 4/1,2
