To Get To The Other Side, Of Course.
Yesterday I heard recounted the conversation between an 87 year old gentleman and his 45 year old orthopoedic specialist. You see the gentleman had a serious car accident seven years ago and had to have one leg pretty much rebuilt and one hip replaced. He was visiting Greenlane for his first check up in two years. The conversation went something like this:
Are you comfortable in bed at night?
Do you experience any pain?
Do you have any stiffness?
Can you get out of bed easily?
Several more questions in a similar vein...
How far can you walk?
Twenty four kilometres
Pause........ Twenty four kilometres?
When did you walk twenty four kilometres?
Two days a go. You see, I walked from Papakura to Newmarket.
Pause........ why did you walk from Papakura to Newmarket?
Because I was in Papakura and I wanted to get to Newmarket.....Oh, and I'm getting myself in shape to walk the Tongariro Saddle.
Well you seem to be OK. Would you come back for another check in four years' time please.
Yes Doctor but tell me, can I be confident you will be here?
