A Slim Ray of Sunshine Breaks Through.......
Quite a remarkable editorial, bringing a scathing accusation of left wing bias withn Radio NZ. Equally remarkable is the source of the criticism, The commentary could well have been penned by a Sir Humphrey's author - one of the execrable pariahs so scorned by the bloggers of the Left. But of all unexpected places it springs, like a brightly coloured and sweet scented water lilly floating on a noxious oxidation pond of media bias and journalisitc incompetence, from the pages of the Dominion Post.
The Dom is not noted for having any right leaning disposition and accordingly it deserves congratulation for breaking away from the cosy coterie of chummy media types and telling a few home truths. Recent events, especially the suspension of Sean Plunket and the formal complaint lodged by Keablog would indicate all is not well.
A true public service broadcaster, for example, would take seriously the impartiality of its news, current affairs and other spoken presenters. Chief executive Peter Cavanagh would probably protest that it does. Really? Would a serious broadcaster let its mid-morning host imply that National leader Don Brash, having conceded the election outcome, was improper to try to form an alternative administration in case Labour and co fell out? Would it let its early evening host regularly browbeat interviewees? Would it continue to employ someone who throws a paddy in the newsroom and does not discourage talk that he wants any high-profile job?
One wonders whether there is any connection, albeit tenuous, with the official enquiry into bias underway within the BBC.
