I ran across this article
by Theodore Dalrymple, describing the conditions in Paris and other French cities. The mind boggles that this is the condition in a modern Western state, he describes it as worse than the apartheid townships in South Africa. There's too much good stuff to excerpt and it wasn't till I got to the end that I noticed it was written in 2002. So really, it isn't a surprise things are burning up, but it is surprising it's taken so long.
Dalrymple has a bunch of other very good articles there as well that are worth reading. It seems pretty clear that countries like France have happily bred themselves a multigenerational deep and dangerous problem that have no idea how to fix now that it appears to have reached a tipping point. While they blither on about "hidden hands
", if Dalrymple's analysis is even half accurate then the hands aren't exactly hidden, the government just doesn't want to find and face them.
As an aside, it is curious to note that Scoop has no info
at all on the Paris riots. What's up with that then?
