Using the cellphone prevents the bomb belt from exploding - D'oh!

Every now and then Slashdot has a funny sequence of comments. Here's one in the thread about the sanitized version of The Simpsons for Arabic-speaking countries:
Taking Homer and stripping out all of the Americanisms isn't going to make it funny to people with a mideast cultural sense of humor (it would probably be funnier if they just left the Americanisms in). Homer is a success in America because we are laughing at ourselves. I would bet Omar could be as much of a success if the show could present the same kind of local irreverent humor about life there like it does for life in the US.
I wonder what local-arab irreverant humor is like? Any local-arabs have any insight?
Maybe Omar could be a suicide bomber? Then again, that would make for a short run.
See, it's funny because he's an unsuccessful suicide bomber.

"Oh! Now I'll never get my 72 virgins..."

That wacky Omar! How will he screw it up this week?

Omar went to the movies to blow himself up in a crowded area.

Unfortunately, it was a soppy movie and he was crying so much, he short circuited the detonation device.

"Omar - you are still alive"

"Yes, I went to pieces in the movie theatre"

"Not from where I'm standing"

That whacky Omar.

The "all arabs are suicide bombers" jokes just never get old.

I scrolled down two stories and saw

correctly identifying the poster as bigoted. Is finding that joke funny bigoted too? ZenTiger, what is your opinion?

I re-edited my previous post for better clarity:

There is a difference between a bad taste joke and poking fun at a specific person's stated interests.

My post was pointing out a bigoted attack on some-one for the crime of stating "bible reading" as an interest.

There is also a difference between a bad taste and poor taste joke.

My suicide bomber joke above was a bad taste joke. The Anon comment was in poor taste.

People can go too far. It depends on the context and the overall intent behind the words.

Generalising to ALL Arabs I find in poor taste, because it seems more aimed at being bigoted towards Arabs than poking fun at suicide bombers.

Another example is the Space Shuttle Challenger jokes that emerged after the tragic accident -

Q. What does NASA stand for?
A. Need Another Seven Astronauts

This is a bad taste joke, but it lets off steam in what was a huge tragedy. Same deal with poking fun at suicide bombers - letting off steam over tragic/horrible events.

This is different than abusing all Arabs, which moves into the poor taste area, and to be ignored or flamed.

Does that make sense?
