Click to enlargeThe Whig posted a low-res version of the photo above on his blog and
compared it to a photo of whiteys lynching blacks in the 20th Century. My initial impression of the recent photo (
taken in Texas after Katrina) was that it was simply warning looters off, but on close examination of a
higher-res version the top line reads "Drunks With Guns!" rather than "Drunks With Guns", which could be interpreted as referring to the men in the photo rather than theoretical looters. Thus the sign could be interpreted as saying "We're drunks with guns! We shoot looters!". Also the two guys on our right are holding cans of something or other. That's a bit of a worry - but maybe it's coke.

Apparently it's in Texas. Of course taking a humourous photo in a state where you are allowed to carry guns is the same as a lynching. Of course, if you are mentally retarded.
Ahh. I was wondering. Found some sites which said it was taken in NO. Will correct.
Wouldn't swear to God it wasn't NO of course, just that that site seemed to have a good source.
Check out the hand cannon third from left :)
Yeah I saw that. I'm more concerned with the guy holding a pistol and a can of something....
*sigh* New Zealanders are so naive about such things. This is Texas, of course they are not kidding around.
I'm still not certain of the interpretation of the sign. I don't mind them shooting drunks with guns. If they ARE the drunks with guns my original assesment of them as complete f*ckwits still stands.
My point was no more profound than "rednecks throughout the ages are stupid and callous with regard to human life".
Well I hung around some American guys who thought going out in their (mostly Japanese) four-wheel drives and shooting at tincans amongst the trees was acceptable behaviour for 20 yr olds.
But they didn't come back to the city and want to shoot their parents, their friends, their neighbours, or subvert the justice system, or string up some blackfolk. They were pretty friendly really. AND they knew where New Zealand was.
Still I didn't live with them, so who knows - perhaps lurking just beneath the surface of normal suburban American life was a secret so terrible no one would admit to it...
"An armed society is a polite society"
Sure beats ringing 111 here in N.Z. and hoping that a) the dispatcher knows where you live and b) the police aren't too busy ticketing speeding drivers to attend the call.
If you read the comments at Grouchy Old Cripple where it forst appeared you'll find a hilarious dicussion on the right to carry arms and how god feels about America.
A lot of venom not high on rationality.
Oi! No shooting at tincans! I protest most vehemently!
It is obvious the "Drunks with Guns" is referring to themselves. They are holding guns, and cans. They are therefore a) drunk, b) holding guns.
Yes tincans. The trick is to shoot it once to pop it into the air and then shoot it again before it his the ground.
Great sport!
From the colors on the can and the locations, I would say that the two cans are both Pepsi 12ounce cans.
As an American who has hung around people who like to own guns, hunt, fish, drink, shoot cans or whatever his entire life, I can guarantee that the guys in the photo are referring to themselves with the "drunks with guns" comment on their sign. This is sometimes referred to as self-effacing humor (or humour for you Kiwis).
Anon, most Kiwis know this. Some just like being perverse.
Come on everyone, ya'll (southern for you all) are reading way to much into this. It is supposed to be a simple, but funny, warning: To protect our family, our homes, and our belongings, we will use force if required. Lets step back and look at what happened with the looting in New Orleans… Families were raped, homes were looted, complete breakdown of moral values. This was not done by your "average joe" but by those few that are willing to step beyond the law for their personal gains. This sign tells those few what to expect if they try to loot in this neighborhood. Also, to quote another American sign that is humorous way to convey a message: Protected by Smith and Wesson.
