Pride and Prejudice

Over in Farrar's comments section, Russell gets a bit shirty...
I think the point is that we shouldn't see the likes of sirhumphreys as any kind of role model for decent behaviour.
It must be tough having someone fact checking what you try to pass off as information, indecent even. But that's what you get when you step outside the little one-man show of the radio booth. Curiously the founders of this bad role model (all nasty all the time, kids) are steaming ahead with the non-partisan TopSpin project. Funnily enough no one here has even commented on the issue being discussed in that thread over at kiwiblog. Oh the indecency.

LOL. After the abusive crap you have dished out consistently to Russell over the last 6 months one small niggle at you guys and you get up on your little high horse all antsy pantsy. It seems you can dish it out but can't cop it. Pathetic is the word.

It must be about time to fisk (or is 'abusively crapperise the favoured term these days?) Browns 9/1 post. Four years late, but we weren't around back then.

Saying "hey you're full of crap" when someone is full of crap isn't abuse, it's an observation.

Saying "you're complete festering moron with a face like a jar of smashed arseholes" is abuse.

See the difference?

Yeah let's see, fact checking and following the quoted links is abusive. Statements like "over at the sewer" and "all nasty all the time" with no factual basis are what then? Hugs and kisses?

c'mon..you guys dish it out to brown more than to anyone else...

and i have too..but much of yours' seems to lurch into ongoing personal abuse..rather than questioning/arguing against whatever it is you disagree with..

so ..i guess you'll just have to cop some on the chin..and not get all precious about it..

(he's quite puffed up and sniffy about you lot ..eh..?.."role models"..and "decent behaviour"...i can see him slipping into a pompous grumpy old bastard role quite easily later on in life..eh..?..possibly getting close to a colnel blimp figure..he'll have to watch that...(very close to a reincarnation of ck chesterton in many ways..really..)

i guess you must be getting to him/grinding his gears..for him to react that way...

and anyway..the elections over now..

No one's getting precious phil, I thought it was bloody funny actually. Hopefully it is grinding some gears, because frankly when you don't allow comments, don't answer emails and sift round other blogs making hit-and-run comments about your own writings, well you can't get too upset when people take apart your own disinformation on their blogs. It's good the election is over, cos now he's back to writing about stuff he really knows nothing about, eg science.

If some-one could find a quote where I have said something nasty to RB that wasn't a reaction to something he said, I'd be quite amazed and the first to apologise.

Yes, I do disagree with his point of view, but I am also pretty sure I have explained why.

The myth of "all nasty all of the btime" is more enjoyable in the generalisation I guess. Just like Chris Trotter today: "The truth is the right does not believe in treating every person as a thinking, feeling individual with hopes and aspirations to be respected and, if possible, fulfilled."

I presume he meant all 49% (or whatever the agreed figure is) of NZ centre-right voters. It appears Chris Trotter is suggesting not just Sir Humphrey's, but the entire right are "all nasty all of the time"

It's amazing how quickly these things grow, isn't it?

Here is the logic,

Lefties care.
Lefties reckon X.
Righties dont think X.
Righties dont care.

To be frank, until RB gives readers a forum at his own site, underneath his own articles, where they can counter his argument to his face (so to speak) and where they would feel some obligation to be respectful and polite, he has no right to complain about what is said to a completely different audience on other website.

The fellow has an undershot jaw. Never trust a man with an undershot jaw. Heinrich Himler had and undershot jaw. It is a sign of weak character. Now that should get him going. He'll burst into expletive laden latin, any time now.

Indeed.

I find chefens post funny.

If we didn't acknowledge criticism we'd be just as bad as Brown - crapping on others from a position of popularity.

Lets face it, blogs don't have the resources to research posts by contacting the subjects directly, so we provide feedback mechanisms instead - for factual corrections, counter-criticism, etc.

But Brown feels free to republish badly-checked items almost always traceable to some popular US dem blog - yet he provides no forum for responses. Far from being part of the new media, he is at best straddling the old on-way flow of information loved by journalists everywhere and the open discussion/confrontation/free-flow style preferred by bloggers.

He is like the worst combo of styles from the blogs and old media - highly opinionated AND one-way (unless youre a favoured emailer).

Now Zen, Trotter might be talking out of his arse generalising about "the Right", as though there were no right-wingers anywhere that might be in favour of a harm minimisation approach to drug abuse, but how often do we read generalisations about "the Left" on right-wing blogs, generalisations in which I can't recognise myself at all and following which the more demented commenters will cheerfully refer to us as "these scum"? Neither side has a monopoly on reasonableness.

You have a good point PM, but generalising left/right isn't much about decency or lack of, which was what got this whole thing started.

Agreed PM. However, I personally hold journalists to a higher standard than the average blogger. A bit like Nandor remarking that he'd held himself in check as MP and was looking forward to re-radicalising himself or some such term.

I also made the point on the Friday night thread that I think the blogging medium is far more acidic, and that it helped to be a little more forgiving on the rants, and to take it less seriously - for both sides.

Finally, I get this impression that many left wing commenters think the right are particulalry rude, and the left are typically polite. I find people on both sides acting rude, and I find less right wing people claiming the right are more polite.

I'd agree that the right wing commenters tend to kick back if pushed (remember Jordan Carter's punch in the nose experiment?), whereas the left wing commenters tend to keep the comments more snide.

It strikes me as a little hypocritical, but maybe I'm now generalising? I tend to prefer to simply point it out as it happens (when I can be bothered), which explains a few of my Frog blog posts.

"A bit like Nandor remarking that he'd held himself in check as MP and was looking forward to re-radicalising himself or some such term." Yes, that one was a bit of a jaw-dropper! I like Nandor but he's really far too honest for his own good - sometimes you look a lot better if you lie, mate!

Blogger ZenTiger said...

Rather than lie, just avoid answering the question. But then again, if he wants to re-radicalise himself, that's an excellent start.

Many people paint the Greens as left wing looney radicals anyway, so what's he got to lose?

Funnily enough, whilst I believe some of the Greens are left wing looney radicals, I don't include Nandor in the same category. Good luck to him.

He is well into his 40's and his only career option is to snivel around the varsity scene toadying up to Clark and student radio.

re adolfs' comment about browns' 'undershot jaw' being proof of untrustworthiness...it is interesting to see adolf is one of the last holdouts for the long discredited psuedo-science of phrenology..
