New Spy Series - "The Infiltrators"

Sometimes you'd think Mr Machiavelli lives on in computer key boards. I'm still trying to figure out how I got onto this fellow's Christmas Card list. Can you just see the conversations with Condaleezza and GW? I did write back and suggest having me on his list was a bit like inviting Arafat to a bar mitzvah.

Hey all,

In three hours, I'll be finished my work as a Green Party media officer, and will be headed for a month of holiday. If you have any Green media queries, you should contact Fran Tyler (04 4706679/021-473-900 or fran.tyler@parliament.govt.nz).

If you want to get hold of me, I can be emailed on michaeledappleton@hotmail.com or called on (04) 476-4391.

I'm starting work as a foreign policy officer at New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs from November 7, so will be contactable there from around that time on michael.appleton@mfat.govt.nz.

Kind regards, and best luck for the future, Michael

P.S. My apologies for the "more emails" email a moment ago. I pushed the wrong button.

Why the hell is the chief PR guy of the Greens going to work in Foreign Affairs? And as a 'foreign policy advisor'?!

Since when has spinning for the Green Party been relevant prior experience for a job like that?

It's a bit like Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Soon the watermelons will be everywhere.
But it sounds like a good CronyWatch in Helengrad.
Wonder if the NBR knows.
Think I'll tell them.

I think you will find he will be a policy officer, not an advisor. MFAT is a good place to turn idealists into realists (ie move them to the right on the political spectrum). Once they get out of little of NZ, see the real world, and have to read about threats in the world, I think you will find a number of then make the move to the right. In my experience, MFAT policy staff are further to the right in political thinking (didn't they advise Lange not to ban nuclear ships?) than most public servants.

I do wonder what his thoughts are on free trade as MFAT are very much a pro-free trade organisation.

Sorry, you're right - 'officer'. So is this a demotion (paycut) to get a long-term career going at MFAT?

Michael is as well qualified as anyone to work for MFAT. He's an extremely smart and likeable guy - studied at Cambridge, etc. Anyone who knows anything about him knows he will do a fine job at MFAT.
