Muldoon-style regional bribes are back

Clark has given Winston Peters an entire toll-free bridge for Tauranga. I guess that gives Winston Tauranga in 2008. Bob the Builder can't compete with $155 million of taxpayers money.

Citizens of New Zealand can rest easy - infrastructure projects are now deemed critical so long as a local politician helps the Prime Minister get back in power. Because that's the way it should be, right?

UPDATE: Will this be a pattern in the future to buy off smaller parties? Give their leader a regional pork barrel project.

UPDATE2 - Dunne and Transmission Gully. From the Labour-United Future coalition agreement:
The government has also agreed that central government funding which is available for the specific Wellington regional roading programme will be able to be used to fund a highway through Transmission Gully if that is deemed to be the preferred option at the end of the current evaluation programme.

Not at all AL - if the voters are sick of Winston, then they are sick of Winston. Pork doesn't always work, especially if its viewed cynically.

I don't share your faith in Tauranaga voters, though I guess we'll find out the hard way. Peters only needs to gain a little out of this to win in 2008.

So why hasn't Petter Dunne got Transmission Gully approved?
Is he useless or what?
Dunne has been Liar-bour's lapdog for years and has nothing to show for it except a useless Families Commission.
