The Iron Lady

Thanks to Darren Greenwood for reminding me of the eightieth birthday tomorrow of a woman who was one of THE formidable politicians of the 20th century. I would rank her alongside Golda Meir, Indira Ghandi and Ronald Reagan. Not for nothng did her enemies refer to her as 'Atilla The Hen.'

The money quote from the linked Telegraph tribute:

With a perfect predictability, the BBC chose to call their main programme to mark her 80th birthday The Shadow of Thatcher. It strikes me that "shadow" is precisely the wrong word. What Margaret Thatcher did was to shine a fierce, bright light upon her country - an experience that was both painful and necessary for all involved

Seems Sir Hump's aren't the only ones who are 'onto' the BBC.

An amazing woman who not only changed her party and her country, but her main opposition party in the process. Amazing that the things she started doing in the 1980s are now par for the course today for us, but were so widely condemned as foolish then. There indeed is a lady not for turning.

Cheers Adolf and Ashley.
The impact of what Mrs Thatcher did to the UK (if not global) political scene can be highlighted by what Labour was offering Britain in 1974, just prior to Maggie taking over the Tory leadership from Ted Heath.
It's frightening stuff.
Never in their wildest imagination would Tony Blair or the supposedly more left-leading Gordon Brown ever contemplate anything like this.

I was hoping we might want to reflect on Mrs Thatcher's legacy and ponder any inspiration that the NZ right can take from her.
For example, Mrs T stuck to her beliefs and changed the course of Britain, if not the world.
Eventually, it brought her downfall.
But what is best, trying to be a leader or a follower of public opinion?
Something National might want to consider in the years ahead.
What do you think?

here she is on why blair should not have taken part in the invasion of iraq...

"..“.."The fact was that there were no facts, there was no evidence, and there was no proof. As a politician the most serious decision you can take is to commit your armed services to war from which they may not return…..."

way to go maggie..(there haven't been many times in the life i have said/thought that....it's so momentous i've just blogged all over it..)

Phil, you are peddling third hand leftie gossip. I thought as much when I saw your comment. Her office has refuted the gossip. You should know better.

Phil I like mince pies. With lashings of tomato sauce. Go and have another look. They do not dispute she said the words because they were not there when they are alleged to have been said by your third hand source. They also pointed to her many public statements in which she backed the decision 100%. It's the same leftie technique so beloved of Phil Goff.

phil that'e the best you can do for a source you'd better give up. I told you it was third hand and I was right. Even the Indepedent, commie rag that it is, concedes she was and is in favour of the decision to go in. Get a life man.

Whatever it's faults The Independent does have Patrick Cockburn and his summation of the situation in Iraq on the eve of the vote on the constitution is worth reading.

It's also an excellent analysis and history of the occupation and why it has failed. I would like to see a Sir humphrey's demolition job if he is wrong.

Well if shitting out links without any original thought qualifies as "discussion" then Google is the number one debater on the planet.

btw..did you read my post on how marijuana makes your brain grow..?..seriously....just published research..on mice..

nicotine...heroin..cocaine..and your favourite drug alcohol..all kill brain cells..marijuana makes brain cells grow..

and adolf..i am walking proof of this thesis..left school at 15..barely able to tie shoelaces..
smoked chronic amounts of weed for decades..went to uni..got a masters with honours..

now...if i had spent decades consuming chronic amounts of your favourite drug..i'd be back at the barely able to tie my shoelaces stage..eh adolf..?

oh btw..the scientists say the cannabis consumed must be chronically strong for the brain to grow...(so i've been on the right track there too..eh..?

excuse me..i have to go and grow some brain cells...:)

does it feel like a knife through your heart does it..?..one of your heroes blowing apart one of your favourite little piles of bullshit/self-delusion..eh..?..

(sorta spoils the birthday festivities/feeling..eh..?)

(is that why you steadfastly ignore the hurtful message..and have to lash out at the messanger..?
(we understand...why for us the equivalent would be nelson mandela coming out and saying the apartheid guys had it right all along..eh..?

it must be difficult for you..be strong..you'll get through it..:)

a conundrum indeed..

phil(whoar.co.nz)

Ah Phule... that you clearly can't distinguish between the purposes of a post and a comment surprises me even less.

The fact that you keep coming back here to be aggravated by posters, whose opinions as you must surely have realised by now will never be swayed by your "arguments", is fascinating. IMO indicative of a borderline (or perhaps not so?) personality disorder often found among heavy users of your favourite drug. Similarly for your references to yourself in the second person and your laughable attempts and "mindreading" the intentions and though processes of other people. The latter trait is often found among the depressed and schizophrenic.

is that what is called an ad hominem attack..?

phil(whoar.co.nz)

Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, an ad-hom attack would be to call you an obtuse pot-head troll or similar without supporting facts.

The above post, however, is my informed opinion of your mental state based on observations (noted in the post), albeit limited by the medium, of your behaviour and thinking. To put it charitably they are rather unusual. It was also motivated by my genuine curiosity as to why you post here and what you hope to achieve.

And to return to the original subject. It occurs to me that Maggie could say pretty much whatever she liked and my respect for her would not change markedly. The reason for this is that my opinion (like the posters) is based on what she did around 20 years ago as PM and not what she says today. Contrary to popular opinion conservatives do not receive telepathic instructions from Karl Rove and thus we don not have to be in lock step on all issuess all the time.

Finally, it is clear that you are being disingenuous by fixating on a third hand quote (read your own article) without bothering to examine the larger context of her other statements or the political situation in the UK.

If you can cogently explain (surely a simple task for a masters student?) why a UK Conservative might say what she is alleged to have said but still support the war then my opinion of you will be somewhat rehabilitated. I'm not holding out much hope though.

duh anon...did you read what she said..?or are you just being disingenuous..?..or did you not understand the meaning of her words..? which part of what she said do you not understand...tell me..and i'll walk you through it...(after all..i am a graduate now..:)

(i mean..the toxic cow said what she said...how can you spin that..?..oh that's right..call me a pot smoking troll...and ignore that the bilious bitch (english version)has dumped all over one of your pillars..ha..!

and your ad hominem wasn't an ad hominen because..?

btw anon...are you a bit thick/slow..?..or just pretending to be...?..(is that an ad hominen right back at ya..?..)
