I have a cunning plan

Oh yes, Baldrick?

Instead of having a typical boring blogroll, I've implemented a Vast Right Wing Conspiracy sidebar which will show the most recent couple of posts from members of the VRWC.

This achieves two things:
1) Keeps us up-to-date on other goings on around the blogosphere (the right half, that is)
2) Automatically filters out the irregular bloggers, as their posts won't show up.
3) Promotes less-often updated blogs to our readers
4) Even better - I won't have to use Bloglines when I'm out and about.

If you have Firefox then you can have a gander here. If you hover your mouse over a post title you should get a short excerpt of the entire post. I haven't added any Blogger/Blogspot users yet, as the plugin I'm using doesn't support Atom feeds. I guess I'll use Feedburner or something similar to fix that little problem. Actually it does work with Atom.

Sorry Internet Explorer users - I haven't fixed the rendering problems yet [Or rather - Microsoft's intentional bug to make Internet Explorer work better in Windows, which oh-by-the-way screws web designers and competing browsers].

Not bad, but not getting the excerpt. Firefox 1.0.7, WinXp if that helps.

Oh yeah and i'm hurt I'm not part of the VRWC yet!!!

1) You're a Blogger/Atom user.
2) Hover your mouse of the post title, the first 20 characters or something should pop up.

OK, I lied. Atom feeds do work, but Aaron's took bloody ages to poll for new data.

Still crying, but i will accept your explanation.

Beautiful..works...just like you explained and I ignored...must be a VRWC thing to not read everything....must remember Left good, right bad...must remember Helen is our first "elected" PM...Jenny was an interloper....left good, right bad...

what's the difference between that and your own personal favourite live bookmarks?

Cool stuff. How might one get on to that list? Our posting is not "irregular".

sorry will add it now.

I will add all the blogs on my rightwing blogroll, but need a way of pruning out the blogs which haven't posted for a couple of weeks. I've emailed the author of the plugin.

what the hell is a personal favourite live bookmark? That crappy function built in to Firefox?

Thanks AL. Is your script JavaScript or PHP? If PHP, it should be relatively simple to set up a function that checks if "pubDate" (which the vast majority of blogs use if they are RSS2, don't think the tag is in RSS0.91) is within 2 weeks of the current date.

It's several PHP scripts linked together.

I don't know PHP, and don't have time to dive into it ontop of everything else.

The plugin is here:

I don't really want to include any Javascript in the site, except the plugin we'll be using for editing posts, and maybe one for editing comments.

Ashley - how would I go about increasing the number of characters included in the summary included as the TITLE of the href?

Blogger Ashley Clarkson said...

AL - I'll take a look at the code, and see if I can figure out how to increase the character number.

AL - the restriction on the characters showing up when you mouseover a link (the title stuff of the href) seems to be limited by the browser, not so much by the script. If you look at the page in IE, the full contents of title show up. So it is Firefox it would appear that is limiting it. I'm not sure if that is something you can tweak in Firefox, but it is not a problem with the script.

If you wanted to increase/decrease the length of what is put in the link for the title, then I think you need to edit $maxlength on line 244 of bdp-rssaggregator.php

OK, thanks Ashley. That's a bit of a bugger.

And did you have a look at the date-purging? Filtering out bloggers whose most recent post is say 7 days old would be great.

Have you guys noticed that Rodney made a post recently about that troll idiot, and it looks as though almost (if not all?) of the comments on that thread are by the troll posting under different names?

AL - I think I saw something that might be adaptable to do that. I'll dive back in to that code.

This site is run by Word Press, isn't it? If so, what do you think about adding a little image (avatar) for each commenter?

I've seen them used on a few Word Press blogs. You can get the code from here:

This (Lefty) site from Australia as an example of where it's had a rapid uptake:

(They also seem to have got around the Internet explorer problems).

Just a thought.

I like the Avatar thing. I'd miss RWDB's cheesy grin and Gooner's winning smile otherwise.

Blogger Antarctic Lemur said...

Yeah the avatar thing is easy to add. But its the main functionality I'm concerned about - changes I have to make to core WordPress files and the structure before I do the importing of Blogger posts/comments, and get you guys to move over.

Have you noticed the little random quote thing? (OK that was purely wasting time after frustration getting something else working). I've got a new masthead as well. Will upload that stuff tonight.

We're nearly there! Just need to add some comments spam protection and fix the IE layout problem.
