BBC Comes Out of Closet

The BBC has announced it is to set up in competition with Al Jazeera, chasing the Arabic speaking Middle East market. I'm not sure why, as the BBC doesn't carry advertising. The dead giveaway that they want to tell Arabs whatever Arabs want to hear can be seen here:

Surveys have shown the World Service reputation for objectivity fell in the Arab world during the Iraq war, but has since improved. Listener numbers have also risen in countries such as Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan during the past year.

The sad part of it all is that a whole host of other 'foreign language' channels will close to fund this execise in the worship of Islam.

Weren't the founding staff of Al Jazeera mostly ex-BBC types in the first place?

Yes, the linked article indicated that the BEEB tried a joint venture with some locals a few years ago but they fell out. Funny that, I thought Arabs were such easy people with whom to do business. Never any doubt about being told the truth etc......... The Pommy journos decided to stay on and work for the new boy on the block, Al Jazeera. The local lads probably bled the BEEB chaps for information and knowhow and then decided they didn't want them hanging around any more.
