Dr Sharples not only held his own among leaders with more than 100 years parliamentary experience between them, he succeeded in de-demonising the Maori Party with his warm style and carefully selected inclusive messages. He had no idea what he was talking about. He didn't even know what the Cullen Fund was. Audrey Young thinks he "held his own"?
But no number of technical hits that he won on political points could overcome his self-inflicted handicap.Eh?
Even if he had slain Helen Clark, Jim Anderton and Jeanette Fitzsimons on tax cuts, he could not have won. This could never have been his night.
It was impossible to see Dr Brash as anything but tainted, in everything he said.

Maybe she's out to become NZ's own Maureen Dowd?
Oh she just means he wone but she wished he would lose. When did I hear lefties and their cohorts screaming this would be a make or break debate? Clark would walk all over Brash?
Have you noticed how RNZ today have moved the goal posts on the brochures beat up? Two days ago they were anti Greens brochures that Dr Brash was supposed to know about. When he openly admits he was told about the possibility of anti Government brochures the helpful media change them into 'anti Labour' brochures.
But will New Zealanders fall for it? We don't have a Fox News Channel to present any sort of alternative viewpoint.
We don't *need* f-ing FOX news.
Brash won this debate- Brash will win the country.
It's really simple: Labour keeps smearing - in a week that will probably find both the PM and a couple of senior ministers under criminal prosecution or facing private prosecutions.
Labour needed a big hit to wipe out Brash - National is setting the agenda, 60% of voters prefer National's policies. Bulding hospitals and jacking up nurses pay doesn't make the health system any better: It makes it worse - and NZ knows this now!
Labour hasn't wiped out a one-term political neophyte when supported by the best economy NZ has had in the last 20 years. The whole country is desperate for a change.
Anonymous,
I wished I could share your optimistic outlook but with the media in an hysterical feeding frenzy (like Labour Radio this morning) over Brash National need to hit back quickly with something against Clark's credibility. Just talking about tax policy etc isn't enough now.
With large sections of the media leaning distinctly to the left it's an uphill fight.
Good Lord, which debate did Audrey watch?
By the way, did any one else find the debate utterly boring?
Helen Clark is a self confessed fraudster
Don Brash is a self confessed gentleman
End of story

um adolf..there are two sets of pamphlets..
al..your yearning for the unbiased coverage of fox news is a hoot...
sharples did well..anderton did well(he got in some good swipes at brash..)...peters did ok..but i think it was more as an entertainer...
clark looked uncomfortable at times..and wasn't at her best..but the minor players covered well...
dunne was just full of sanctimonious crap..
hide did a good impersonation of brashs' unloved lap-dog..sitting there panting away...'please don..please don..'..otherwise he was adequate..
brash didn't do as badly as i expected..but he was still far from being on top of his game..
(i think the real bloodbath will be the one on one on three on thursday...
and fitzsimons redeemed herself well..especially on the cannabis issue..emphasising the greens don't adopt or not policies on the basis of whether they will be popular with everyone...it's a matter of what they believe is right and correct.....very good...
