They Don't Like It Up'm

Remember Corporal Jones from Dad's Army? In a way that's who Wee Willy's nemesis Bob Clarkson reminds me of.

Like Dr Brash, he is running his campaign the way he wants to, not the way tradition, other MPs and lazy jounalists would have him run it. Note the bleating about his failure to 'front up' to the farce of candidates meetings. Don't worry about the fact he's already fronted up with a few million dollars of his own dough. Larry silly Baldock exclaims plaintively "It's deplorable....."

The funniest line of all though is the Tailor's Dummy claiming 'full credit' for making Tauranga what it is today. Bloody amazing what you can do over a twenty year period from a restaurant or bar in Wellington.

Voters aren't as stupid as candidates and jounalists however and the polls reflect their sophistcation and rejection of the tired old ways. Just as the polls are reflecting the voters' new found fascination with Dr Brash's fresh approach.

I have never been convinced that 'performing in the House' was a useful criterion with which to guage the value of a politician. I first learnt that when I saw Jimmy Stewart give it to 'em in "Mr Smith Goes To Washington"

Perhaps Clark, Williams, Maharey, Cullen, Simpson and Co should have watched a rerun of that old movie before they began their campaign. Goff must be wondering at the real meaning of Philibuster.

Adolf, you are right. Clarkson is old enough and respected enough to simply not play by the media's perceived rules. That is the reason for the beat up. I like the guy, I grew up in that part of the world and I can assure you the punters there like that attitude too.

I think he has Tauranga.
