New Orleans - Katrina update

Summary points:
  • Two areas of the levee system have broken, leaving ~80% of New Orleans under water
  • New Orleans to be completely evacuated, including ~13,000 from the Superdome
  • Will take up to 30 days to pump water out of the city, 3-4 months before areas can be re-inhabited
  • Estimated 1 million Louisiana residents left homeless
  • At least 110 dead in neighbouring Mississippi
  • 95% of Gulf of Mexico oil production out of service
  • Oil has been released from the US national strategic reserves
  • National Guard troops and Police squads from neighbouring areas sent in to control looting
  • Interstate 10, the major highway leading into New Orleans from the east, has been effectively destroyed
  • Mississippi casinos wiped out
  • According to the US Navy, 4 amphibious assault ships are enroute to the region to offer assistance
  • 125,000 National Guard troops nation-wide activated to provide support
