Civilisation

"Tom Paine":
And that is precisely what Osama Bin Laden believes he is doing to Western Civilisation right now. Those planes being rammed into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were to instill in us the same fear felt by the centurion in charge of a pitifully small garrison in a lonely fortificationas he looked out across the ice at the thousands of savages who were about to overrun both him and his entire world. Osama, and the Islamist movement he represents, have calculated that we are the modern Rome, and that we are bored, decadent, and have no faith in ourselves.
I don't think that way. But if the rest of the "West" does I concede we might be nearing the end. Long Live India!

This has been rehashed a million times, but I thought Osama and his ilk are pissed at the USA's continued presence in the Middle East, and what they see as America's support of Middle Eastern dictators, ie the Shah of Iran.

But if I completely missed the point of the post, ignore the above.

No, the longterm plan is to establish an Islam-wide Caliphate.

One strategic goal is removing Western troops from the core Muslim countries (Saudi Arabia is after all the home of Islam - not a good look if female American soldiers are waltzing around the place). This was the drive behind Osama's joint declaration of war on the USA with other terrorist groups in 1998 at that conference in northern Iran.

The other strategy is to embarrass the "West" (well, the USA) on the international scene with high-value terrorist attacks which attract a lot of media attention and scare the population.

Both goals rely on the active political participation of pacifists/isolationists/anti-Bush types in the West, which is why Osama's latest recordings sound like they were scripted by Michael Moore and repeat ultra-Left talking points not mentioned in his earlier videos.

Well Osama needs to read about Malthus. The populationin all Arab countries is skyrocketing, and the ability of their environment to provide adequete food and water is not going to last forever. As it is many Arab nations (Egypt being chief amongst them) need to import food. The funny thing is, it's the infidel west that does this. America's great sword won't be it's military, it'll be her ability to export 40 million tonnes of grain (provided the oil and gas holds out).

If Osama want's some sort of Great Islamic Caliphate, he needs to figure out how to feed the growing number of mouths in the Arab world. I guess he feels that Allah will provide..... Maybe he looks to Russia and Europe for his lebensraum.

The thing is, the Romans didn't have nukes and nerve gas to hold the Danube and Rhine frontiers. The Europeans do. There will be no Arab invasion of Europe, and I doubt the buggers will make it this far either. Osama and his mongrels might nuke a city or two. But they won't achieve their higher goals. I'm pretty sure about that.

Malthus? Goddamned MALTHUS?! Hey why doesnt he read Paul Ehrlich as well, or maybe William Vogt. No, he should read something truly contemporary, James Howard Kunstler.

I am sick of economic novices who have a higher opinion of Malthus than they do of Adam Smith. (Not targetted at you, Tane. The person I am refering to will know who he is when he reads this.)

Kimble,

I don't think Osama would read Kunstler; he's a godless American infidel on a one way trip to Satan's super-spicy kebab shop.

So I fell back on Malthus, everyone knows who he is, even if most of us haven't read him (it makes him easier to quote). But I still think that the Arabs are stuffed. Micheal Klare makes the point that oil depletion isn't what will screw them, it's water. If there is another Arab-Israeli war, it'll be over water, with religon as the veneer.

Osama might have a vision of a global caliphate, but that just puts him on a par with the guys who have a vision of global desktop domination for Linux. Of course, your Linux obsessive hasn't started killing Windows users yet.
