The cavalry arrives in New Orleans

According to Fox News Channel a large convoy of truck and trailer units, emergency vehicles, amphibious vehicles (Marine LAV's?) and 4WD's towing boats has just started arriving at the western bridge into New Orleans. The reporter (he was standing on the bridge) suggested up to a 1,000 or so vehicles were approaching (his wild guess). I assume the buses for people at the Superdome/Convention Centre are following.

The reporter said he saw fire trucks from as far away as Los Angeles in the convoy.

Now THATS a response. When are the Chinooks and CH-53s bringing in the 82nd Airborne and the Marines?

Nothing on the news sites yet.

UPDATE - 2:37am: Large numbers of emergency vehicles are arriving at the Superdome.

UPDATE - 3:00am: It's been half an hour and every news site apart from Fox is unaware of this. Instead they are running multiple stories on racism (Blacks left behind!) and of course trying to blame it all on Bush (was he the one who ordered people into the Superdome without considering the consequences? was he the one who ignored the failing levees? I don't think so). What a bunch of drips.

UPDATE - 3:02am: NY Times reports airliners have been contracted to fly people out of NO/LA. Now they just need to bus people to the nearest operational airports, then they can be flown to States further afield with prepared emergency shelters.

UPDATE - 3:05am: The first Associated Press wire report appears: "National Guardsmen pour into Louisiana"
NEW ORLEANS - Thousands of National Guardsmen with food, water and weapons streamed into Louisiana on Friday to bring relief to New Orleans' suffering multitudes and put down the looting and violence. "The cavalry is and will continue to arrive," said one general.
Well, I can rest easy then.

Will be interesting to find out if the "1000's" of vehicles statement is true.

By law the US Army/Navy/Airforce is restricted what it can do on US Soil.

Thats why its always the National Guard (state combat units) and Coast Guard (federal - paramilitary) that do almsot all the work.

I'm surprised 9but I shouldn't be really) at the criticism of Bush when my understanding is that he has no power to interfere without a request from the Mayor and/or State Governor. Is it possible they both are Democrats?

They are further limited by the fact Louisiana doesn't have a Martial Law, er, law.

The BBC World News ignored this new development for at least several hours. They preferred to run stories on how the white Police were letting the black people die.
