The actual head of the Oil-for-Food racket, Kofi sidekick Benon Sevan, has resigned, having hitherto insisted that a mysterious six-figure sum in his bank account was a gift from his elderly aunt, a lady of modest means who lived in a two-room flat back in Cyprus. Paul Volcker's investigators had planned to confirm with auntie her nephew's version of events, but unfortunately she fell down an elevator shaft and died. It now seems likely that the windfall had less to do with Mr Sevan's late aunt and more to do with his soliciting of oil allocations for another company. So I did a bit of Googling for a reputable news source to confirm this claim. The London Times (Feb 5th, 2005):
She [Sevan's aunt] died last June at the age of 84, three months after she was admitted to hospital with serious injuries after an accidental fall a few feet into the lift-shaft in her block of flats.I mean holy crap. Sevan used her as his alibi for the mysterious appearance of $US160,000 into his bank accounts AFTER she died by falling into an elevator shaft. When Sevan's aunt had her little accident (March-April 2004) last year, the UN corruption allegations were just starting to make their way into the main stream media, after being covered by rightwing websites and blogs since at least 1998 (from memory - thats the first I remember reading about them).

Reminds me of the Father Ted episode when he nicked Bishops Brennan's money and got caught saying "It was just resting in the account"
AL, it doesn't fit the story. You know, G.W. Bush is the real bastard, all confirmed by Bill Burkett.
UN is the moral authority, the reason why we didn't need to go into Irak. Just let the UN do its job. It needs to be a UN job.
The journos are getting afraid. They have been on the wrong side of history and they start to realise it.
And keeping it quiet does no longer work.
You mean you didn't know this already? I used that little story to needle a pompous UNocrat over Christmas dinner. And she died AFTER Sevan used her as an alibi but BEFORE anyone could interview her, perfect timing.
The UNocrat's response? "Oh, Benon is such a nice person. I often see him during lunch at the UN. He couldn't possibly be involved in anything illegal." I chuckled and concentrated on my ham.
The worst part is that this guy is an otherwise intelligent NZer but he just can't bring himself to recognise that giving members from corrupt dictatorships equal weight to those from liberal democracies is a recipe for disaster.
From the timelines I've seen, Sevan only used her as the alibi when he was being interviewed mid last year, but her 'accident' was much earlier in the year. Could be wrong of course.
