BBC spread initial rumours about the Menezes shooting

Have a gander at these eyewitness quotes published by the BBC on 22 July:
"I saw an Asian guy. He ran on to the train, he was hotly pursued by three plain clothes officers, one of them was wielding a black handgun.

"He [the suspect] had a baseball cap on and quite a sort of thickish coat - it was a coat you'd wear in winter, sort of like a padded jacket.

"I saw these police officers in uniform and out of uniform shouting 'get down, get down', and I saw this guy who appeared to have a bomb belt and wires coming out and people were panicking and I heard two shots being fired."
Remember these statements were never cleared by the Police, the BBC just ran with them. So clearly the BBC is partly responsible for creating the initial impression of Menezes appearing to act like a terrorist. While that obviously doesn't absolve the Metro Police of responsibility for killing Menezes, it does alleviate my impression they intentionally lied about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. So they acted incompetently, but not necessarily evilly. If you get what I'm saying.

Note the greened quote above, if accurate, suggests Menezes was in fact being pursued by uniformed police.

UPDATE: In a BBC video interview from the same day, a witness says:
  • he was sitting on train with back to platform
  • heard shouting on the concourse
  • a guy [Menezes] jumped through the door on his right and grabbed the pole and the person sitting opposite the witness
  • undercover cop came through door to his left and shouted for everybody to get out
  • shots fired
Clearly the initial accounts published by the BBC and other media differ significantly from the documents leaked to ITV.
