Flat tax or round tax

One of the threads on Just Left suggest that ACT tax policy is bollocks, the inference that if ACT only poll 3%, then the policy can't be workable and the ACT voters should "see" that. The fact that the Reserve Bank have costed the policy and found it will generate growth and allow government spending levels to remain the same seem irrelevant. All hail the wisdom of the Polls.

There are obviously many possible answers and reasons for ACTs current standing in the Polls. However, the logic used on Just Left is not one of them. Here is one that is just as valid as any other. You are wlecome to suggest your own, just have some reasonable basis for it.

We go back in time when 97% of the worlds population think the earth is flat.

You are one of them.

Some-one comes along and tells you the earth is round. They get their calculations checked by a few scientists, who say "by gosh, they might be right"

Your response is to commission a poll, confirm that only 3% believe this idea and conclude that it must therefore be wrong, because they are failing to convince the population.

Repeat after me:

EARTH IS FLAT
EARTH IS FLAT
EARTH IS FLAT
EARTH IS FLAT
EARTH IS FLAT

You just keep saying it, and it will all be alright. Tell everyone else, because the earth stays flatest when the polls support it. The last part is important.

Update: Berend and Kimble have helped show that an earth-centric story would more accurately explain the situation. I agree, but it takes extra effort! Read the comments and just go with it. This is where I ended up:

Kimble, you are right. I'll have to revise the post. This is going to blow the Labour Government wide open. They thought the earth revolved around Helen. I'm no astro-physicist, but I was getting worried we were going to be sucked into a black hole. If we use the election in a slingshot effect, we may be able to reach escape velocity and save the country.

ACT NOW!

The reason is fear of the unknown The 97% fear having to make decisions that the Gumint make for them now. They find it much more comfortable to hand over the bulk of their earnings so Someone will do things for them. The sad thing is that they would make better decisions than the Gumint does. They are in a comfort zone Busy Busy Busy with their lives and frightened to take on any responsiblility. The reality is they have nothing to fear.Their fear is encouraged by the Socialists so they can Command and Control the peoples lives.Freedom fighters have to convince the 97% that they can take control of their lives

Yes, we are already learning alot by watching Russia, Poland, Latvia etc after years of communism, react by slashing taxes and putting in flatter structures and watching steady growth.

Their situations are different, but there are lessons being learned finally that was mostly theoretical.

Hate to disagree with you ZenTiger, but there was never a time that the people thought the earth was flat. It's a myth created in the 19th centurary.

The Greeks even proved it was round. Anyone else coudl readily believe it when they saw a sail disappearing behind the horizon.

Replace flat earth with Earth orbiting sun and you will be safe.

Kimble, on that note, I seem to remember that NASA sometimes uses calculations that are based on the Ptolemaic system that the sun revolves around the earth :-)

ACT's tax policy has been costed by Treasury. It 'costs' about 6 billion. The surplus is 7.4. We can leave current spending AS IS, implement flat taxes, and still have $1.4 billion in the bank. Treasury also said that GDP would improve by 1% per annum. Over 20 years, that is approximately $20 billion dollars (based on GDP of $100 billion. I'm not entirely sure what GDP was last year).

And, whilst I have the floor, when tax was slashed in the mid 80's the actual tax take increased from the resulting increased GDP and boosted economy.

The left cannot and will not see this. It is antithesis to their way of life.

I really wish that the commenters running that line would come here and talk about it on your bloody blog.

Steady on there, Jordan. You are in the running for the mostest, longest, stupidest, rudest, vulgrist comments in blogging history for this month.

Adolf: But he deleted most of them!

Berend: I did a quick poll and 97% of the people today believe that people of older times believed in a flat earth, so I have no idea what you are talking about.

Anyway, myth is a powerful story telling mechanism. In many fables, the animals can talk. We are so lucky, because they often turn out to be wise.

Kimble, you are right. I'll have to revise the post. This is going to blow the Labour Government wide open.
