Fear not for the REserve Bank has saved us all from the injurious petrol price hike.

On the day before the extortion was due to begin the RBNZ announced the withdrawal of five cent coins. Bloody good! I thought. Now we won't have to pay the damned petrol increase because we won't have enough 5c coins to take along when we gas up.

I think they have announced they will also use cheaper material in production of coins.

This will save 2 million dollars in production fees.

Being a force for good and not evil, they have also announced they are going to shrink the sizes of the coins.

This has two major effects:

1. We are back to annoying small (10 cent) coins in our wallets.

2. All the parking meters, vending machines and coin operated machinery will have to be upgraded, completely blowing the cost savings.

I wonder if they will take the opportunity to put a banana on our 50 cent coin.

This is the logical endpoint of seeking 'efficiency' above all else.

And Julek just reminded me that the blind people will not be too happy about the size change.

Unfortunately, this means nothing to the RBNZ, who are deaf and dumb in this case.
